Captain For A Day Eligibility and Competition Rules

The enter the competition candidates must:

  • Identify as female
  • Be between the ages of 12-16
  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident (proof of identification will be required)
  • Be able to travel with parent or guardian between 29 June – 2 July
  • Be physically able to board, disembark and move around the vessel unassisted

Route to entry for the competition and details how to enter are:

  • All candidates must answer the following question – This is the first time HMS Protector will visit the Arctic, what should she do while visiting the region?
  • Entries must be in video format. The video should not be longer than two minutes and should be in English or French.
  • The entries must be sent via the application form available here. Together with the video, each candidate must send the following contact details: name, date of birth, email address, and their telephone number. Those details will be used to inform candidates about the results of the competition.
  • The candidates must enter the competition with a video that has not been published online prior to the announcement of the Captain for a Day competition and has not been used for applying to similar initiatives.
  • Only one entry will be accepted per person. Multiple entries from the same person will be disqualified.
  • Closing date for entry will be 23:59 hrs, 1 June 2022. After this date, no further entries to the competition will be permitted.
  • No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason.
  • There is no fee for participation.

Judging Details

  • The winners will be selected anonymously based on their video by a judging panel, which includes British High Commission employees and HMS Protector Captain Milly Ingham. There will only be one winner.
  • The winner will be notified by email within 10 days of the closing date. If a winner cannot be contacted within four working days of notification, the British High Commission reserves the right to withdraw the prize from the winner and pick a replacement winner from other applicants.

Prize Details

The winners’ prize consists of:

  • A day on board the HMS Protector with Captain Milly Ingham (30 June 2022)
  • Tickets to the annual Royal Nova Scotia Military Tattoo held that evening
  • Travel and accommodation expenses for the winners and up to (2) chaperones to Halifax, NS (max. 3 night stay)

The rules of participation in the Captain for a Day campaign are as follows:

  • The winners must have a written parental consent to board the vessel.
  • The winner must be available to travel to Halifax, NS. for 30th June 2022
  • The winners must have a chaperone, who is over 21 years old (parent, teacher, guardian) in order to travel to Halifax, NS and take part in the Captain for a Day programming.
  • The winners as well as their chaperone must have a valid Canadian ID and/or passport for domestic travel.
  • The winners agree to be photographed and/or filmed during public engagements within the Captain for a Day campaign in order to promote the initiative.

Additional Details

  • The British High Commission’s decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition, including but not limited to the appraisal of the participants, the organisation of carrying out the competition and the awarding of the winners’ prizes will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • By entering this competition, the entrant and her lawful representative is indicating her agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions.
  • The British High Commission reserves the right to cancel or amend the contest and these terms and conditions without notice in the event of a catastrophe, war, civil or military disturbance, act of god or any actual or anticipated breach of any applicable law or regulation or any other event outside of the British High Commission’s control. Any changes that may affect the contest will be communicated to the applicants as soon as possible by the British High Commission.
